Handwoven Woman Stole

A `Handloom‘ is a loom that is used to weave fabric without the use of electricity. Weaving is primarily the interlacing of two sets of yarn – the warp (length) and the weft (width). The equipment that facilitates this interlacing is the loom.
Usually, mill made yarn is used to produce the handwoven fabric. Mill made yarn is spun on to cone shaped holders and is referred to as `corn yarn’. Yarn is made in single & double count in different Nos. of count such as 20’s, 40’d, 60’s…etc. 60’s is thinner than 20’s. `Corn yarn’ is readily available in different colors in the market and sometime yarn has to be dyed in the desired colors.
  • Yarn Dyeing : Yarn dyeing is done by two ways : (i) Hand dyeing (ii) Machine dyeing.Hank yarn is normally used for Hand Dyeing. Means of “Hank” is a specific length of yarn that is in a coiled form. Normally, hand dyeing is done in rural parts of our country. A certain amount of water is taken in a large size of vessel. Then, a vessel puts on the terra cotta stove. Terra cotta stove is normally known as `Chullah’. A large size of bunch hank yarn is poured in the terra cotta stove and shake constantly on a certain temperature by a skilled artisan of dyeing. In this way, yarn is prepared by hand dyeing process.
Whereas, another technique is Machine dyeing for the yarn. In the machine dyeing, bobbin is used and arranged in the machine. Bobbin is a one kind of round metal small instrument, which is fitted in the machine. A large nos. of bobbins are used for single color dyeing. Here, a certain temperature is passed in the Bobbin to dye the color. Obviously, machine dyeing technique is faster than Hand dyeing.
After the dyeing, a small size of reels are fitted in the shuttle. Shuttle works for the weft to produce the fabric.
  • Warping :  Warping is a process, which converts the hank yarn into a liner form to give the length on the loom. Normally, a warping is done either on a huge drum or two equal sizes of pillars. Pillars are installed in a plain large area on certain distance to rotate the yarn. A Handwoven artisan prepares min. 100 meters yarn in single or multi colors, as per the design requirements. In this way, a warping is prepared. Warping is used for the warp to produce the fabric.

  • Weaving : Finally, warping yarn & shuttle is arranged in the loom to weave the fabric. In our country, there are three types of loom is used, such as Pit loom, Stand loom and Frame loom. In this way, a handwoven fabric is made and eventually, it is ready to sell in the market.
