Vintage textile articles shown here mostly belong to Saurashtra & Kutch, Gujarat, India. All articles prepared in different types of hand embroidery of Saurashtra & Kutch. All types of embroidery are handicraft and textile signature art tradition of the tribal community of above said two regions of Gujarat. The Main tribal community of Kutch is Meghwal, Ahir & Jat. Their history is so interesting – they migrated from Pakistan & some parts of Afghanistan at the time of separation between India & Pakistan in 1947. Today, some hand embroidery work is also being done on the border of Kutch – India & Pakistan. They brought these textile art with them for their livelihood. One community is called Rabari also involved in textile handicraft work in Saurashtra & Kutch. Their main profession is grazing sheep, tending herds of cattle & buffaloes and selling its milk.

Hand embroidery is really an identity of Kutch and Saurashtra as all types of embroidery are absolutely unique and no one can find the same in any parts of the world. There are 20 types of hand embroidery of Kutch and 10 types of Saurashtra such as Pucca work, Neran work, Jat Garasiya, Rabari work, Sadu bharat, French knot, Patch work, Soof work, Ahir work….etc. In all tribal communities, a mother teaches this type of textile art to her girl to keep art alive forever and the girl prepares herself her trousseau from childhood. In Gujarat, there are other arts such as Lipan work from mud, Leather work & Rogan painting. Thus, Gujarat is very well-known for its rich handicraft products.
